Campus Emergency Procedure

For a physical injury or serious illness, faculty, staff member or coach must:

  1. Determine Urgency of Situation:
    • Urgent:
      • Injured or ill person whose condition requires immediate medical attention that includes:
        • Back or neck injury
        • Chest pain or difficulty breathing
        • Profuse bleeding
        • Unresponsive person
        • Psychological distress
      • CALL: 911 Activivating Emergency Medical Services. Give exact location (building & room).
      • CALL: 10316 OR 10317 - Campus Security or
        CALL: 10317 - Campus Nurse - to activate emergency service personnel on campus
    • Non-Urgent:
      • Injured or ill person whose condition does not require immediate attention which includes:
        • Sprains
        • Strains
        • Lacerations without profuse bleeding
      • CALL: 10316 or 10317 - Campus Security or
        CALL: 10377 - Campus Nurse - to activate emergency services personnel on campus
      • Advise the injured or ill person not to leave the area until help arrives.
  2. In the event of an urgent situation involving a student, the security officer or nurse notifies the DSES (ext. 4125), who has the authority and responsibility for the coordination of efforts made on the student's behalf (policy SY03 Emergencies Involving Students).
  3. Security officer obtains a photograph of an on-campus injury site for risk management.
  4. Security officer or campus nurse submits an emergency incident report to the Office of Business & Finance. Required information includes: Name, Penn State ID of injured or ill, date, time, location, description of emergency situation and action taken.
