I’m a senior at Penn State Fayette, about to receive my Bachelors in Business Administration with a minor in Marketing. When I graduated from Geibel Catholic High School (Connellsville, Pa.) in 2009, and got a job at the Sheetz store in Rostraver, Pa I didn’t realize how busy I’d be working full time while also going to school full time. But going to a Penn State campus close to home enabled me to continue surrounding myself with my supportive family and friends, to save some money, and to benefit from a campus that understands the complicated lives of today’s students. It definitely gets hectic, but it’s all starting to pay off!
Two weeks ago, while working at my store, a district manager approached me; she’d noticed that I wasn’t the sort of “day-to-day” worker just clocking time for a paycheck. I am the type of employee who ensures the job always gets done with participation from the entire team. Because of my leadership skills and work ethic, the district manager referred me to Sheetz Corporate Headquarters in Altoona, Pa., where I was asked to represent the company in a corporate video highlighting its core philosophy: the Sheetz staff are team players and the job cannot get done by one person alone.
Shortly after the video was posted on YouTube, it went viral! It soared onto the popular page, which shot it up to about 135,000 views in three days. Individuals at Sheetz headquarters were astounded. They decided to promote my story onto their Facebook page and Twitter account, which easily sent the video, and my image, out to about 1.3 million viewers, which led to an interview with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (Triburne Review article) that reached thousands of readers in the metropolitan area.
Sheetz has since distributed my story to each one of its locations in a bulletin called “Sheetz in the Newz,” and there are plans to run an article on my story in the company magazine, which gets sent to every employee in the company.
Intrigued? Check me out in a blog written by Ashley Sheetz, Social Media Coordinator. She says I’ve “achieved a YouTube Favorite level of celebrity. His 130,000 plus views attracted a lot of attention from Sheetz job seekers as well as other companies who expressed interest in luring him to their brands. We can’t blame them! Driven to win? Connected? Dependable? High Energy? Respectful? Yeah, Joshua Suppa exemplifies the Sheetz DNA through and through!”
When I look back at the decisions I made in 2009, including working at Sheetz and deciding to attend Penn State, I realize that I could not have made a better choice than Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. Penn State has given me the tools to excel in my studies and to succeed in my work. At the Fayette campus, I can have a flexible class schedule that allows me to work while in school, can study alongside fellow students who share my work ethic, and have the constant support and guidance of my professors to grow as a person and an employee.
Being a Penn State student has helped me deal with this whirlwind experience by providing me with a foundation of knowledge and preparing me to handle any given situation in the most professional manner.
Throughout my last semester at Penn State Fayette, I plan to take an internship with Sheetz; maybe I will even be offered an intern position at headquarters. Regardless, I will use my Penn State training to shoot for the stars by securing a full-time position within this billion dollar corporation.
