CEO Conversations debuts to enthusiastic audience.
UNIONTOWN, PA – More than 150 students, faculty and staff came to hear local businessman, philanthropist, and Fayette County Commissioner Joseph A. Hardy III talk about his road to business success at the September 11 debut of “CEO Conversations,” a new series of talks for students at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus. Hardy is the founder and CEO of 84 Lumber Co. and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort. He also has been serving as vice chairman of the Fayette County Board of Commissioners since 2004.
An initiative of Penn State Fayette Chancellor Dr. Emmanuel I. Osagie and hosted by Penn State Fayette’s new Center for Entrepreneurial Technology Education Services, CEO Conversations is designed to bring the business community onto campus to give students the opportunity to hear from and talk with key individuals in the local, regional and national business world about business, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
Hardy’s lively talk was a mix of reflection, anecdotes and humor. He began his speech by telling the students, “If I can make it, you surely can.”
Hardy told his success story of being a young man who worked hard to make it to the top. His lumber company began as a small combined investment between his brother and his former partner, which they started with only $20,000. Today, Hardy has turned 84 Lumber into the largest privately-owned building materials supplier to professional contractors. Hardy told the crowd that by offering competitive prices and good customer service, they can be successful in business endeavors.
Hardy answered a lot of questions from students, faculty, and staff. He emphasized the importance of teamwork and believing in one’s self, “Believe in yourself. If you get kicked, pick yourself up again.” He told the crowd that he makes mistakes every day, because he is only human. However, he pointed out, “I believe that mistakes are life’s daily lessons. When you make a mistake, analyze it and get something good out of it.”
Hardy told the students that they can do anything they want if they put forth enough effort.
