Establishment of the James R. Gabriel Award

UNIONTOWN, PA - Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus recently annouced the establishment of the James R. Gabriel Award.
The purpose of the award is to honor and recognize outstanding achievement by an undergraduate student who is enrolled at Penn State Fayette. The award was established by anonymous donors in memory of the late James R. Gabriel of Hopwood. Gabriel was a prominent area businessman, and the president of Gabriel Brothers, a chain of successful clothing stores which he operated with his brother, Arthur, in various locations in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
Gabriel was a member of St. George Maronite Catholic Church. He graduated from Kent State University, where he was honored as the outstanding graduating senior in political science. After serving three years in the U.S. Navy, he became assistant professor of political science at Waynesburg College, later serving in that same post at Penn State Fayette and West Virginia University, where he received several fellowships in politics. He also recieved the Ford Foundation Grant from the University of Pittsburgh, and was first alternate for a Fulbright Scholarship to continue studies in Australia.
