2006 PSUAC Champions
2006 PSUAC Champions … Again!
The Penn State Women's Volleyball team claimed back-to-back titles (2005, 2006) sweeping the PSUAC Final Four Volleyball Championships defeating Mont Alto 2-1 (30-27, 22-30, 16-10) and Penn College 2-0 (30-18, 30-26) for the top seed in the winner's bracket. The Lady Lions then defeated Penn College again 2-1 (21-30, 30-23, 15-10) for the PSUAC Championship match.
Not only did Penn State Fayette bring home another PSUAC Championship title this season, the Lady Lions turned some heads this season, knocking off both NCAA III Chatham College (3-1) and LaRoche University (3-1), making a name for themselves in the local volleyball scene and making a step toward their future goals. Also, the Lady Lions earned the #1 ranking on the USCAA volleyball polls in their initial season with the new conference.
The Penn State Fayette Lady Lion volleyball team concluded their regular season play 24-7 overall, and 18-1 in conference play. Despite a small roster, the 7 dedicated Lady Lions fought hard to finish with an outstanding .774 win percentage, and an 8-1 home record, coming up big both in and out of conference.
Sophomore Outside Hitter, Abby Holbrook and Freshman Setter, Rachael Dunham came up big October 2-11, earning USCAA (United States Collegiate Athletic Association)
Player / Setter of the Week honors. Abby put up huge numbers, posting 9.6 kills/game, 9.2 digs/game, and 2.4 aces/game, while Dunham handed out an amazing 150 assists, earning the Lions a 5-0 record on the week.
The Lady Lions offense has been evenly distributed this season with 4 players averaging over 2.5 kills/game - Abby Holbrook (4.0), Melissa Beucher (3.0), Kelli Kite (2.9), and Heather Kelly (2.5) - as well as a strong serving effort from Susan Lengvarsky, leading in both service attempts (330) and service percentage (.936). Abby Holbrook led the squad in both kills/game, and total kills, posting an outstanding 296 this season. Abby currently holds the record for most kills in a season (296) and has totaled 503 kills after just her second year with the Lady Lions. 5’8, Middle Hitter, Melissa Beucher led the squad with 68 total blocks.
Not only were the Lady Lions big on offense this season, Freshman Libero, Abbie Renze, posted a season-high 30 digs vs. Chatham College on 10/17. Abbie not only set a season- high, but also set new Penn State Fayette defensive records for most digs in a match and most digs in a season. Abbie has consistently headed up the Lions defense, leading in digs with 495 total and 5.4 digs/game. She is on track to reach the 1,000-dig mark in just half of her college career!
The Penn State Fayette Lady Lions have had an outstanding 2006 season and plan on continuing their winning tradition in 2007.
