Joe ShostellAreas of Expertise/Research Interests: My research agenda is quite broad and encompasses a range of sub-topics within ecology (ecosystem, community, and population levels), toxicology and population genetics including nutrient dynamics and stoichiometry, biodiversity, identification and study of environmental toxins, metacommunity theory, the historical migration hypothesis, and genetic diversity within populations.

What do you like most about Penn State Fayette? At times Penn State Fayette reminds me of my own undergraduate institution where I grew up in Minnesota. It provides an education center where students and teachers can interact with each other positively, such that a healthy, unbiased, affirmative learning atmosphere is maintained.

What do you like most about Penn State Fayette students? Their curiosity.

What is your favorite class to teach, and why? Environmental Science and Ecology are two classes that are dear to my heart in part because they have obvious links to my research. Still, Mammalian Anatomy can be fun too…where else can students use toilet paper to model protein structure?

What is your favorite quote? “Know thyself.”—Delphi Temple inscription
