Module Descriptions

Module 1 - Introduction and Theory (12 hours)

This overview module will provide a general knowledge base of information, tactics, techniques, and procedures related to the various types of less-lethal weapons. Relevant conventions, statutes, and treaties will be discussed. Video clips and pictures will be used to illustrate the use of less-lethal weapons. Students will begin to gain an appreciation of less-lethal technologies and their role in a law enforcement mission. Medical, political, legal and ethical considerations will be discussed.

 

Module 2 - Technologies 1: Kinetics (8 hours)

This module introduces the student to less-lethal weapons that operate principally through direct-impact with persons. Video clips and pictures will be used to explain various examples of kinetic weapons, their use, and launching platforms.

 

Module 3 - Technologies 2: Riot Control Agents and Related Technologies (8 hours)

Pictures and video clips will be used to demonstrate tactics and procedures in the use of less-lethal riot control agents. Some mathematical calculations will be used to describe the effectiveness of agents such as CS gas. Medical considerations will be discussed.

 

Module 4 - Technologies 3: Maritime and Land Vehicle Stoppers (8 hours)

This module examines the technologies used to stop vehicles on land and at sea. Brief, unclassified descriptions of the various weapons in this class and how and why these weapons may be used in various types of military or law enforcement operations will be discussed.

 

Module 5 - Technologies 4: Advanced and Emerging Technologies (8 hours)

This module will consider existing as well as conceptual less-lethal weapon technologies. Pictures and diagrams will be used.

 

Module 6 - Less-Lethal Applications and Public Order (8 hours)

This module will cover current theories of crowd dynamics; the use of less-lethal weapons in crowd control and management of non-compliant individuals. Tactics, techniques and procedures will be related in a general manner.

 

Module 7 - Integration of Less-Lethal Weapons in Decision-Making (10 hours)

This module will afford the opportunity for practical application of the knowledge gained in the previous six modules. Students will be given a scenario involving a crowd containing non-compliant individuals and innocent persons. The students will plan their response to this scenario, using a defined amount of available manpower, less-lethal weapons, and lethal weapons.
