2010-2011 CETES Achievements
In 2010, the Penn State Fayette campus student small business incubator, CETES, reached a milestone of success as result of its student undergraduate applied research program. One of the first student-businesses created, Just Simply Clean, achieved considerable growth in 2010, reaching employment of three full-time and twenty plus part-time personnel with annual sales over $200,000. The commercial cleaning business was initially started by two Penn State Fayette students, Galadriel Strauser and Luke Horton, as a part of an undergraduate research project. Galadriel is an Organizational Leadership (OLEAD) major, Luke is a business administration major. Just Simply Clean offers office and construction cleaning services in Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Maryland. The faculty founders of CETES, Peter Eberle and Bill Gardner, consult with the student-clients, as part of the undergraduate research process. The projects entail work in the researching, starting, maintaining, and building of small businesses. The CETES incubator has been instrumental in helping students create more than seven businesses in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
Initially, the Just Simply Clean student team won the 2nd Annual CETES Student Business Plan Contest in 2008. Co-owner Strauser won the WriteIdea Business Plan Competition sponsored by Seton Hill University’s E-Magnify. Galadriel is a member of the Fayette and Westmoreland Chambers of Commerce, the Builders Association of Fayette County, and is a mentor coordinator with Business Networking International. She was a featured speaker at 12th Annual Entrepreneur’s Growth Conference at Duquesne University in June 2010 and was highlighted in Pittsburgh Magazine’s Spotlight on Women in Business, April 2010. Luke Horton, who will graduate in May with a bachelor’s in business management and marketing, has gone on to earn his real estate sales license. He is a member of the National Association of REALTORS, Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS, and serves on the PR and Ethics Committees for the Fayette Board of REALTORS.
After implementing a successful marketing campaign, resulting from a course marketing applied research project, in conjunction with fellow Penn State Fayette business major, Garry Ankrom, owner of Garry Ankrom Motorsports, Just Simply Clean has seen explosive growth in Westmoreland County and is planning the opening of a second location in Mt. Pleasant in the Spring of 2011. Also slated to graduate in May, Ankrom currently owns and operates his racing team, as well as www.paracingonline.com, a racing news and information website, and GoFast Racing Vinyl.
The Penn State Fayette campus is proud of the business and undergraduate research success achieved by students, alumni, and the CETES program in improving the lives and employment opportunities of those living in southwestern Pennsylvania.
